Background:
Although both diabetes and the remaining tooth count is considered perioperative risk factors, no previous study has examined them in the same cohort.
Objective:
To clarify the effects of diabetes and the remaining tooth count and diabetes on perioperative mortality.
Methods:
Using DeSC database, we identified deaths occurring within 30-days postoperatively among patients who underwent surgical under general anesthesia and analyzed risk factors.
Results
Of 561,515 surgical cases, 3,414 patients died. In the overall analysis, biguanide use, a higher number of remaining teeth, and female gender were associated with a reduced risk, while elderly and insulin therapy were associated with an increased risk. Biguanide use was associated with a reduced risk of death in the group with 20 or more remaining teeth, while thiazolidinedione use was associated with a reduced risk in the group with fewer than 20 remaining teeth.
